St. Barbara

14th-15th century
Fresco
Church of San Salvador, Villar das Donas, Spain

The tower is St. Barbara's attribute. The trompe-l'oeil "steps of bricks" pattern at her feet is characteristic of the images in the church. The high-waisted dress with a broad, square collar was in fashion around the turn of the 15th century, as in this image of Christine de Pisan:

Illuminated miniature from The Book of the Queen (BL Harley 4431, circa 1410-14): Christine de Pisan presents her book to Isabeau of Bavaria, Queen of France 1385-1435. The queen and her two companions wear the type of high-waisted dress with broad, square collar seen in the St. Barbara portrait at left. Barbara's hair, though much more simply arranged, has a verticality similar to the elaborate coifs of the three ladies. Source: Wikimedia Commons.
